Seven ways to make a difference – Start local!

This time of year we can often get caught up in the holiday shopping and forget that there are other ways to give. Here is a list of 25 ways to give of yourself this holiday season (or any time of year).

  1. Volunteer to help children learn to read at your local library.
  2. Help cook/serve a meal at your local homeless shelter.
  3. Hold a clothing drive/canned foods drive in your neighborhood and donate the goods to a local shelter or food bank.
  4. Visit an elderly person at a local retirement home.
  5. Pick up an elderly person’s medicine or groceries for them.
  6. Volunteer to walk dogs at your local animal shelter.
  7. Donate animal food/blankets/toys to a local animal shelter
  8. Coordinate a local park/beach cleanup.
  9. Volunteer at your local hospital.
  10. Donate toys to your local children’s hospital.
  11. Donate your blood in a blood drive.
  12. Coordinate a holiday toy drive to donate to local foster children.
  13. Paint a mural over a graffiti covered wall.
  14. Volunteer at (or start) a community garden.
  15. Donate your old books to a local school or library.
  16. Plant flowers to brighten up your neighborhood.
  17. Volunteer at your local boys and girls club.
  18. Tutor students in your local schools who need a little extra help.
  19. Vote and encourage other people to vote.
  20. Send a letter to a local U.S. veteran or to an overseas soldier thanking them for their service.
  21. Become an organ donor.
  22. Bake cookies and bring them to your local fire/police station.
  23. Set up a recycling system in your neighborhood.
